Womanzone - A head, heart and hand community group

We will expand our community group ‘Womanzone’ for women across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Womanzone provides a safe, women-only space addressing needs of those in recovery from addictions and trauma, often living in poverty. The project provides connection and facilitated support sessions for personal development, improved health and well-being.

Our goals:

  • Improved mental and physical health: Funding will cover facilitated sessions and outdoor activities to help women be aware of how to improve their mental and physical health - using different techniques to manage challenges they face such as anxiety.
  • Being Sorted: These sessions help women cope with practical life situations. Women get support on self-management (finances, time, household, family); self-coaching skills (plans to achieve their goals); and undertake volunteering to build their CVs.
  • We want the project to empowering for those involved.

How we will achieve our goals

We will undertake outreach work to support women considered ‘harder to reach’, due to more sessional staff and a communications strategy. We will liaise with third parties to establish a thorough referral process for women who could benefit from the project, and fund outdoor activities providing respite, improved health and access to green spaces.

Where the money will go

Our pilot project enabled us to support 100 women on a shoe string. But this funding will help address the challenges of many more women in the community, through helping to build their confidence, develop friendships and manage their lives during recovery. Previous group members have said how our holistic approach leads to long lasting changes.
