Wealden Sailability pontoon repairs

(Kent)

Wealden Sailability is a small charity run entirely by volunteers. On two days every week, from April to October we take physically disabled and mentally challenged children and adults dingy sailing. The age of our participants ranges from 8 to 80. In 2015 Wealden Sailability was given the Queens Award for Voluntary Service.

Our goals:

  • To make safe a pontoon used to get disabled children and adults into small sailing dingies. The safety of our disabled participants is obviously our top priority.
  • To make it easier to get wheelchairs safely onto the pontoon.
  • To try and extend the pontoon so that we can handle more of our sailing dingies at the same time, and so give our disabled participants more time on the water.

How we will achieve our goals

The funding is needed to repair the smaller of our two pontoons which is used to launch many of our special sailing dingies, and if possible to make it a bit bigger. It is in urgent need of repair. We would use an outside contractor to do the work, provisional estimates have been obtained and are in line with the amount of the award applied for.

Where the money will go

It will help us to continue with and build on the work we do to provide a day’s relief to children and adults who suffer all sorts of disabilities. It will also help us continue teaching those who are able and want to sail on their own. We currently get about 35 participants on both days every week and we would like to be able to help more.

We shared a fantastic day here on Monday with cherished memories

Honestly the happiest most caring group of sailors and volunteers who worked tirelessly to get 20 families with Disabled Children out on the water

    Thank you

And good luck with the voting
