THE FRIENDS OF DOLPHIN

(Dorset)

Dolphin is a specially prepared boat to give wheel chair users a trip around Poole Harbour. It is run by volunteers.  Two trips daily throughout the summer. Friends of Dolphin is a registered charity which funds and supports the project.  During October the vessel must be lifted out of the water and thoroughly serviced.

Our goals:

  • To continue to give support to the many organisations who use the service, all of whom attest that these trips are useful in focusing the users enthusiasm and excited anticipation. The pleasure is obvious, plain to see.
  • The scheme has been running since 1979, we are now using Dolphin III the third boat. Since the beginning, 45,000 wheel chair users and their carers have enjoyed the two hour free trip.
  • Last year we had to raise £15,000 to replace the engines, which had failed the annual certification tests. Funds are therefore desperately low for annual maintenance

How we will achieve our goals

Fund raising to restore bank balance is never easy. A community award will ensure continuity.

Where the money will go

For more than 30 years wheel chair users and their carers have had something special to look forward to. An experience that would not have been possible without Dolphin. Last year Friends of Dolphin was awarded The Queen’s Award for Community Service. A wonderful recognition of our work – but unfortunately unaccompanied by any cash!

Please vote for this very worthy project. This wonderful experience, organised and delivered by competent volunteers, has brought smiles to so many faces over the years. This project must continue.

People from all over the country benefit from this innovative and unusual project. Most impressive is how the whole thing is run and crewed by volunteers. Every penny they get goes right to the sharp end!

What a fabulous charity & opportunity to take disabled people around Poole Harbour! Now I know about the charity, I hope to bring my mother who has high level spinal injury. It is wonderful to be able to give her new experiences.
