Tenbury Community Pool - Disabled changing rooms

(Worcestershire)

Disabled changing facilities are required at our community owned pool to allow access for all. Due to the age of the building, disabled user groups are unable to use our pool. Furthermore, the local schools that use the pool are unable to bring all of their pupils because some are disabled and cannot access the current changing facilities.

Our goals:

  • Disabled people will be able to use our pool. We have an excellent reputation for teaching people how to swim, in a town on a river, this is a life skill that should be available to all.
  • The local schools can bring all of their pupils without the disabled ones being excluded. In addition to this we can promote our disabled changing facilities to other specific user groups such as riding for the disabled etc.
  • Part of this area is to also provide changing rooms for family use, because at present we do not have any family change facilities either. This creates problems when you have single parents that would like to bring older children swimming.

How we will achieve our goals

The community award will provide the necessary funding for this specific element of our larger refurbishment plans, however this is the most important and urgent requirement prior to getting our funds raised for the next phase to be completed.

Where the money will go

At present part of our disabled community cannot use our community pool and clearly in this modern day and age this is not acceptable. Our pool owns the lifting gear for disabled swimmers to access the pool which is currently used by OAPs. However, at present this is not used by any disabled swimmers because there is nowhere for them to change.

As a volunteer trustee at Tenbury Community Pool, I would like to say a big thank you to Mr J.T. for nominating our Pool for this award. Learning to Swim is a life skill for all & can be learnt all Life Long. Furthermore as a small town on a fast flowing river, swimming is a life saving skill.

At present our disabled and older participants are excluded from this community owned facility due to the dated facilities. Without this grant these disabled facilities cannot be provided in the foreseeable future.

Thank you for voting for us.

This is a well used facility in a small community with the nearest public facility otherwise 10 miles away. The trustees/management are striving to make it all-inclusive and to upgrade facilities to achieve this aim, but without continued public funding they depend upon grant aid, fundraising and public donation to achieve their aims. A worthy cause for support!

As a qualified Swimming Teacher who taught and ran a Swimming Club at the Swimming Pool some years ago, I would like to endorse this application. These facilities are an essential and important asset to any Swimming Pool. At present disabled and elderly swimmers in Tenbury and District are not able to benefit from exercise in the pool, with or without assistance. I am adding my vote because I see this as a positive benefit to both disabled and elderly alike and therefore this project deserve to be supported.

As a qualified scuba diving instructor I am hoping to use the centre to give people with disabilities the opportunity to try scuba once the centre has this new facility.

i have been visiting the area for the summer and i have been using the pool. it is a great pool and lovely and warm for my baby. family changing rooms would be a great addition to an already lovely pool as changing on your own with a baby is a challenge. I cannot recommend this pool highly enough and the warm welcoming staff and other pool users. we need to support and use pools like this.

It is vital that this valuable community resource is updated to ensure that all members of the community are able to use it. It unfairly discriminates against those people with physical limitations at present.

Tenbury deserves this award, so many people give their time to support it and the money would allow facilities to be improved to allow access to disabled people. The pool is a great asset to the town and very well used. Can only wish them the best of luck
