Surrey Wildlife Trust - Wild Explorers Holiday Club

(Surrey)

Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) is seeking funding to establish a holiday club at its Nower Wood nature reserve to inspire children from disadvantaged backgrounds to learn about their local natural heritage and promote the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.

Our goals:

  • As a result of this programme, approximately 50 children, aged 5 to 12, from disadvantaged backgrounds in Surrey will have learnt about the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • As a result of this programme, approximately 50 children, aged 5 to 12, from disadvantaged backgrounds will feel less excluded from society.
  • As a result of this programme, approximately 50 children, aged 5 to 12, from disadvantaged backgrounds in Surrey will have learnt about their local natural heritage.

How we will achieve our goals

An award would allow risky-play tree based equipment to be provided by Monkey-Do, a not for profit company, with 50 free week-long holiday places, including lunches, for 50 disadvantaged young people.

Where the money will go

Recent studies have found that approximately 10% of children in Surrey now live in poverty. This group is also less likely to make use of green spaces and to participate less in physical activities. Interaction with nature has been proven to improve social interaction and inclusion, enhance cultural identity and promote community development.
