Surbiton Royal British Legion Youth Marching Band

SRBLYMB are an organisation for young people aged 8-25. They provide uniforms, tuition and instruments to members who often can’t afford music lessons. The members take great pride in their uniform and the award would be used to buy new tunics and trousers for the younger and new members as some of the current uniform are over 25 years old.

Our goals:

  • To be able to provide new uniforms for the younger members in place of uniforms that are over 25 years old and to ensure that the band have enough uniforms for new members.
  • To install a sense of pride and increase self confidence in the younger members by giving them the responsibility of looking after their uniforms and ensuring they are smart and clean for band jobs. A skill they can carry through to adult life.
  • Give a sense of pride in the band to the local community and supporters and ensure the band is recognised not just by their music but their appearance as well. The band often play for ex service men and women and being smart is very important.

How we will achieve our goals

We would be able to arrange to have tunics and trousers specially made to a high standard reflecting the bands commitment to always being turned out smartly.

Where the money will go

The band have played at many events including Rememberance day, The Lord Mayor show, and New Year’s Day parades in several different countries and at many of these events the band are recognised by their uniforms and are complemented on their smartness. The members wear their uniforms with pride and confidence and the uniforms make them stand out.

I love the Surbiton Marching band performance, they do a great job of playing all the songs and learned new ones, to present them in community activities.
Also, the practice day truly seemed to give them a good and relaxed time.
