Stage lighting for Shiptonthorpe Village Hall Community Theatre

(East Riding of Yorkshire)

Our village hall has played host to our community theatre group since 2009. The annual pantomime involves 40 community members and is always a sell out, attracting an audience of almost 500 over two weekends. A lighting rig would be a tremendous asset to the group and other users of the hall including community fundraising and social events.

Our goals:

  • To provide the village hall with professional stage lighting for use by community groups including the pantomime group.
  • Increased efficiency. Previously we have borrowed or hired lighting equipment as required. The repeated installation and dismantling is time consuming and requires technical expertise. Occasionally equipment has been damaged in the process.
  • Reduced costs, increased profit for the community. To hire the equipment we require for the two weeks of the pantomime would cost £1500; our usual profit.

How we will achieve our goals

The cost of a lighting rig is far greater than the annual profit of the theatre group, despite the hall not charging hire costs. The award would enable us to buy the lighting and a rig to mount it on and an electrician to install it. The lighting will be left in situ for the benefit of all hall users, which includes social events and fundraisers.

Where the money will go

We live in a small rural community and rely on the village hall as a focus for social activities. The community pantomime has brought the village together and helped fund the restoration of the hall. To be able to have our own equipment would greatly enhance the village hall for all users as well as ensuring the long term viability of the pantomime
