Portfield School - Early Years Hub

(Dorset)

Portfield School is in the process of opening an Early Years hub on their school site to cater for children with autism and associated difficulties aged 3-5. As part of this project, we would like to create a sensory room which will help children with autism stimulate their sensory awareness, by giving them rich experiences to aid their development

Our goals:

  • To support 8 Early Years pupils within 1 year of opening the Early Years Centre (Sep 2017 to Sept 2018) and to support a further 8 Early Years pupils to total 16 within 2 years of completing Phase 2 of the project.
  • To help, support and advance the lives of every child we teach. This will be measured on a case by case basis and will include such things as improved communication skills (via use of PECS/non-verbal to verbal etc), improved behaviours, improved independence (toileting) and confidence.
  • To attract job applications without the need to advertise from teaching professionals with a specialism in SEN.

How we will achieve our goals

We would like to create an equipment to help children with autism stimulate their sensory awareness, by giving them rich experiences from exploring, interacting and engaging in a safe environment. The money will go towards creating a unique sensory room.

Where the money will go

We are striving to provide a welcoming, age-appropriate pathway from nursery to special school. With the introduction of our Early Intervention Educational Service we hope to provide for the need arising in placing 4-5 year olds in a specialist environment whilst at the same time improving the outcomes for every unique child on the autism spectrum.

this project will be a great addition to the early years unit. As a parent I remember those early years , when the child struggled to communicate as being quite distressing at times.
