Pop Up SpeakEasy
We currently run some men-only support groups called The SpeakEasy. These take place in static locations, but this project will allow us to develop a mobile pop-up SpeakEasy and make it part of the social landscape. We can pop-up at the match/race days, beach, markets and other community events to encourage men to talk about their mental health.
- To help reduce suicide in an area that is consistently in the bottom 3 areas in the UK
- To reach rural communities that are underserved when it comes to mental health services, particularly those targeting men.
- To de-stigmatise mental health by making talking about it a normal part of life. Our unique approach engages men to talk openly and honestly, without making grandiose gestures. We want to normalise the process of talking about mental health.
How we will achieve our goals
For a small organisation, we are too often stifled through the lack of funds in an area that already has its fair share of deprivation. This will be a unique project for the north-east, let alone UK, This Community Award will have far reaching implications for the life of this project and beyond. The concept is simple but its implication is huge.
Where the money will go
We will be able to reach some much more of our immediate community and the wider area. Mental health needs to have parity of esteem with physical health and making it a regular part of the social landscape will dispel and myths or stigma that people might have. Our unique approach to mental health will be replicated with this project.
