Pensioners Hall (tin chapel) Refurbishment

(Cumbria)

We need to replace a faulty window with smaller one. The sink needs to be replaced with the addition of a hand wash basin, essential for modern standards. The disabled access is via the kitchen and needs to be partitioned off to prevent any danger of cross contamination. The project would benefit our members, other regulars and the wider community.

Our goals:

  • To replace old, damaged window with a smaller, easier to clean and maintain one. This will also free up wall space for more storage units and work top space and enable us to re design the kitchen to incorporate other essentials.
  • We would replace the current single drainer sink unit with a double drainer unit. To comply with modern hygiene standards we need to install a separate hand wash basin for the use of anyone involved in food preparation.
  • The disabled access ramp opens directly into the kitchen. This poses a risk of cross contamination if food is being prepared. A partition wall would be build to divide the access from the kitchen with a new door to access the main hall.

How we will achieve our goals

The award would enable us to get the much needed work done. We have recently replaced the cooker and the water boiler from our own funds. We do a lot of our own fund raising but a major project like this would take a long time for us to achieve and the update is now rather urgent.

Where the money will go

The project would benefit the community, the hall is well used by various organizations on a weekly, monthly and annual basis and is hired out for coffee mornings, fund raising, meetings and parties for all ages and abilities. A lot of the older population live alone, public transport is limited, with refurbishment we could offer snack & chat days

My grandparents spent many hours at the Tin Chapel, my Grandad kept the garden lovely and carried out maintenence for many years. They met their friends there, the Tin Chapel is an ideal meeting place for all members of the community to catch up and have a cuppa. The refurbishment is vital so that the community can continue to use it safely for many years to come.

A lot of people have great memories and affection for the hall, we can’t let this hall suffer the same decline and fate as St Georges hall. We have already done a lot of improvements with our own funds and the generosity of local business and trades.
