New Furniture for Emmanuel Church Hall

The Hall is a busy community hub used for various activities throughout the week for people aged from 0-80+, e.g. a Toddlers Group; Youth Clubs; English Language classes for foreign women; Waggy Tails (dog training) for children with special needs; circuit training/badminton/folk dancing; elderly Keep-fit class; Homeless Shelter.

Our goals:

  • To equip a welcoming space where people in the community can support each other, for example carers of young people with special needs will have a coffee room to provide respite while the person they are caring for is taking part in the activities.
  • To upgrade equipment in multi-purpose space for community use, including whiteboards and tables for the twice weekly English language classes to teach over 70 local women who have recently moved here and do not speak English.
  • To equip multi-functional areas for various use, including lunches for the frail elderly as part of 'Holiday at Home' and where the homeless can have a substantial evening meal and breakfast in the morning; also for use by up to 200 Youth Club users.

How we will achieve our goals

There is a need for a place where people can talk, and support groups can chat to carers or vulnerable adults. This Award will allow a 100-year-old tradition of local community service to be more rewarding and effective. Many volunteers staff the hall but the equipment is worn out. The refurbishing will make a huge difference to the Hall relaunch.

Where the money will go

Furnishing 2 new lounges and refurbishing multi-functional dining areas, means more than one group can meet at a time with increased impact. Parents of disabled young people will appreciate somewhere to talk, while the 2nd lounge can be used by the homeless guests. “So many times we end up talking to carers on the pavement!” [Volunteer’s comment]

Emmanuel is such a community focused church and has a positive impact on the local, wider and international community. The volunteer work is immense and is often taken for granted. I hope the Emmanuel Church Family reaches its goals including new furniture/ equipment to continue with its broad provision. This church and its activities and support/ outreach has had such a positive impact on my life and others and I hope it can be the same for many more people in the future. I don’t live locally any more, but I miss it and wish the Emmanuel Team every blessing in their continued hard work and passion.

Emmanuel does amazing community work and really involves the locals and other people to come and join in with different activities. By expanding the community hall, this will allow for further activities and events to be held at Emmanuel, in order to help the local community and to assist the church further.
