New age bowls at Willowfield Bowling Club

We are a bowling club which has been in existence for around 70 years. Bowling in those days was considered an elite sport in which quite well off gentlemen and ladies would play. However with the sport having been viewed on television over the last few years it has now become quite popular and we at our club are promoting it in our local area

Our goals:

  • If our Award is successful we would intend to use the funds to further encourage local schoolchildren from nearby areas and from both sides of our divided community to come learn and enjoy the sport and make use of our club facilities
  • We now have 2 young boys from our club representing Ireland at Under 18 level and it is our aim to increase this number
  • Bowling is a very competitive sport in Ireland and our main objective is to encourage more folk of all ages and abilities to move away from computer screens etc and get involved in a sport which is open to all and to meet new friends and enjoy

How we will achieve our goals

Bearing in mind that a set of bowls can cost anything from £100 to £300, as a club we would be in a better financial position to provide equipment and clothing to assist those who show keenness and promise awho perhaps may find the initial cost off putting. Bowls for use in the club are very old and out of date now

Where the money will go

We are situated in a densely populated area and are trying to become involved more with local community. We are hosting a family fun day on 5th August and hope this will also help to encourage local residents and schoolchildren to come join us. A lot of our members are from the older generation and we need to inject more spirit into the community
