Mountsorrel Railway Project

(Leicestershire)

To recreate, as an additional attraction to a Heritage Centre, 3 Stonemasons’ huts at a former quarry next to a railway line reinstated by dedicated volunteers. The primary benefit is to the community as an educational resource to showcase the region’s geology and history, through demonstrations of how granite was dressed by hand over 100 years ago

Our goals:

  • We wish to recreate historic skills. A feature of Mountsorrel quarry was the hundred or more stone masons’ huts. Each hut had a stone mason who would work the stone to create road kerbs, cobbles, gravestones and other granite products
  • We wish to maximise visitor satisfaction. The Heritage Centre, associated nature trail, museum and Exhibition Building will all be free to enter. The demonstration stonemasons’ huts will further allow us to enhance the overall visitor experience
  • We aim to develop a strong sense of community pride in local history. The reinstated railway is a unifying force for both villages and the stonemasons’ huts will emphasise the historic importance of the quarry to Mountsorrel’s economic development

How we will achieve our goals

The award would provide all construction materials required for the building of the huts. This would enable volunteers to carry out the construction work. Volunteers have already reconstructed the nearby 1.2 mile railway, repaired the associated structures and are assisting with the build of the adjoining Heritage Centre.

Where the money will go

This will greatly help to open up a site not previously accessible to the public, a historical gem in a very pleasant natural setting full of ecology. This will be a fantastic attraction inspiring pride and interest in the community, connecting people from young to old, through a valuable educational resource
