Mencap Wolverhampton Gateway Club

(West Midlands)

Mencap Wolverhampton (affiliated to Royal Mencap Society) Gateway Club is for adults with LD and other disabilities. It meets weekly and has over 70 members. Some go along just to socialise and others want to improve their skills in crafts, numeracy and literacy. Appropriate hard/software programs would really aid members keen to improve skills.

Our goals:

  • The funding would allow the Club to buy appropriate hard/software to help members to become more computer literate and aid them with their general numeracy, literacy and communication skills
  • The equipment and greater skills in its usage will aid the Club's volunteers with management and administration tasks and enable them to undertake online training necessary for dealing with vulnerable adults e.g. safeguarding and manual handling
  • increase volunteers' and members' confidence in using computers and providing them with skills to enable them to participate in developing both the Mencap Wolverhampton website and the quarterly newsletters for members

How we will achieve our goals

The funding would enable the purchase of the equipment that volunteers need to undertake training and for members to gain communication skills for everyday life

Where the money will go

Having a learning disability sets these people apart from the rest of the community and anything that helps them with basic and communication skills will empower them to become more confident and independent and able to participate.
