mASCot - New space for autistic children, young people and their families

(East Sussex)

mASCot is a Brighton based, voluntary, parent-led organisation supporting families who have children with autism. There are 320 families in the network currently. We run our meets/ activities/therapies from rented or borrowed spaces, we desperately need our own space that can be made completely autism friendly and safe for families to use at any time

Our goals:

  • mASCot is in a position to create a completely autism friendly, stress free, designated space that families can bring their children to in the knowledge that they will be coming to a consistently safe, accepting, inclusive environment.
  • Having our own space means mASCot is enabled to greatly extend it's programme of support activities, we are no longer having to work around availability/suitability and affordability of hired spaces. We can expand the number of people we can help.
  • mASCot will be far more accessible to families for all important face to face contact. People would know where to find us, we would have a known base that families could come to as they need, rather than limited meetings in cafes/public spaces.

How we will achieve our goals

Our partner – Dotties Community Cafe – is supporting us by providing the ideal land space required. All we need is a building! A £5000 award is enough to buy and build a 5m x 4m log cabin structure that can house all of our groups/therapies/workshops. Our own space means that we will be in a position to run more activities and reach more families.

Where the money will go

We’d be enabled to drastically step up the support mASCot can offer. We strengthen our community, providing a desperately needed safe, autism friendly space for families to get together in person, foster connection between our children and create the building blocks for social independence and friendship networks to support their future as adults.

This will be such a brilliant place for us to use. Having a regular, familiar space is so important for our families. ?

mASCot is unique. Not so much a public service – it’s more a parents’ collective – where everybody has a voice. It provides all important peer to peer support with the every day pressures of raising youngsters with Autism, AND also responds quickly, creatively and collaboratively to the needs of members with creative solutions: activities, projects, low cost therapy schemes, training and advocacy.

I’m enormously excited about the potential of a home for mASCot. This would be a huge step in helping so many kids to reach their full potential.

This would be such a lifeline for so many families who desperately need more support, and to feel they are part of a network where they can relax, talk, make friends, have fun and find solutions to difficulties their children experience.
