Impact 100 - Helping people with Dementia through arts

(Devon)

The Creation Station is developing a campaign called Impact 100 – to create positive outcomes for people and families struggling with Dementia through arts and crafts activities.

Our goals:

  • To support 100 people and their carers and families who struggle with Dementia, with a fun and beneficial programme of art and crafts activities.
  • By theoretical and practical research we aim to explore best-practice and develop a programme that has the greatest positive impact on all those affected by Dementia.
  • Create top tips and ideas to share freely with others who suffer with Dementia or are showing early onset of the disease.

How we will achieve our goals

Hands-on creative activities in a nurturing environment can positively support people with Dementia. Due to the emotional, physical and social benefits of our creative approach we see that there is an opportunity for us to apply our skills and knowledge to help those who are affected by Dementia.

Where the money will go

There are 850,000 people with Dementia in the UK. 225,000 will develop Dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. This means that as we live longer we will all know someone who has Dementia. We want to create positive outcomes for people and families struggling with Dementia through arts and crafts activities.

We crafters can effect change and give joy to all sectors of society. Dementia sufferers and their friends and families can especially be helped to communicate without words through art and craft. Such a good idea. Now all you need to do once it is up and running is to encourage its proliferation across the world as Transition has done for local ecological initiatives. Good luck and keep on crafting…

Have you considered using poetry with people with dementia? My dad had it, and I found he could remember and join in with poems he had known by heart when young, although more recent memories had gone. Many older people learned poems by heart as children.

  49. Posted on August 31, 2017

I believe that the more interaction we have with people living with dementia the better ?
I volunteer with AgeUKExeter with a group of people with dementia and their carers and we have great fun when we meet up . Everyone enjoys the friendships made and also the games, craft and gardening that we do at the allotment .

Great campaign which will be hugely beneficial to those suffering with dementia. I cared for my Grandma whilst she was suffering with dementia and if there were options like this available it would have made her latter years far more fulfilling. Let me know if there’s anything else I can do to support or get involved. Sue x
