Helping Families Recover From Domestic Abuse

(Greater Manchester)

Salford women’s Aid is a local charity providing advice, support and refuge for women and children escaping domestic abuse. We have two residential units that provide emergency accommodation for up to 14 women and up to 24 children at any one time. Having these facilities will benefit children to support their emotional issues and experiences.

Our goals:

  • To provide a safe, fun environment where all the children are welcome and encouraged to take part in various activities. To encourage children to build friendships with other children through play.
  • In a refuge a child's education can often be disrupted, our aim is to provide a wide range of educational toys and to allow children the opportunity to have fun and supplement their learning while practicing things they are doing in school.
  • Outdoor play equipment will help children of all ages develop their learning abilities, encouraging children's creativity. Outdoor play has numerous benefits, including health, independence and confidence building.

How we will achieve our goals

A community award would fund our entire play room project and also pay for refurbishment, the play rooms and outdoor play equipment are essential for helping children in despair rebuild their trust, friendships and confidence. A community award would help our charity achieve its goals without there being any unnecessary delays.

Where the money will go

The communal play areas are very popular with mothers and their children, we are sure once they have been updated and refurbished they will look brighter and feel more welcoming, the new equipment will encourage children to come together, giving them the security and learning they so need.
