Gorsley Goffs Primary School Library

(Herefordshire)

The aim is to refurbish the library area of the school. An extension resulted in a redefined awkward space and the furniture did not stand up to being removed. A school of 200 children with little space for browsing books using existing furniture. The school is in a rural area with no library and few buses so the children would all really benefit.

Our goals:

  • Provide suitable fixtures and fittings. The extension has resulted in an awkward shape and the existing old shelving has not stood up to being dismantled so we do not have the furniture to house a school library.
  • A space to engage and inspire the 200 children. The proposed shelving and frames are flexible and displays can be frequently changed to focus on themes or authors and will allow for face out displays which encourage a wider range of literature use.
  • Separate the library from the corridor. The space is currently a corridor/thoroughfare .. the use of specialist furniture will define the space and encourage children to linger, browse and read within the library.

How we will achieve our goals

Specialist furniture would create a vibrant, welcoming space that will encourage the children to choose to spend time in the library area and enable us to develop our stock of modern children’s literature which will engage and inspire the children. The shelving and frames are flexible and displays can be frequently changed.

Where the money will go

Gorsley is a rural school with no access to a library. Buses to the nearest town are infrequent. The current 200 children of the school and future intakes of children would all directly benefit from this project. The current school library is not fit for purpose after an extension and requires careful design to better use the existing space.
