Developing Parental Engagement through Sport

(Antrim)

The site is very exposed and whilst parents drop pupils off, many don’t want to wait as there are no refreshment facilities or any shelters for Parents or Pupils to stand and keep dry. The Site is also used by Academy Rugby and Football Club.

Our goals:

  • To increase parental engagement and support of school sports. The primary aim is to encourage more parents to get involved in supporting their child and the wider school community through staying at the sports grounds when they drop off pupils.
  • To provide adequate shelter and catering facilities from the elements. The site is very exposed and lacks the facilities it requires.
  • To support the work of the Academy Rugby and Football clubs to further engage the local community in sport. The school has an excellent link with the sports club and a building of this nature would further develop their profile in the community.

How we will achieve our goals

The community award will develop the site into a functioning sports club for both the school and the community. Providing safe shelter for spectators, catering facilities for visiting teams and spectators. The modular building and catering facilities will enhance engagement with parents and local people who support the school and club.

Where the money will go

The playing fields are known for being very cold. It is therefore an under used and supported resource by Parents and the local community. Having a modular spectator and catering building, which can be used like a proper clubhouse, will develop community engagement and extend the use of the facility.

As a parent of an Academy pupil and an ex pupil myself, I find the notion of one of the richest schools in Northern Ireland seeking critical public funding for a shelter so parents don’t get wet whilst watching their children play rugby in the rain to be a disgrace.

Before voting I urge everyone to look at the many other significantly more worthy causes on the site which could benefit of this funding.

As a parent who nominated the school I am sad to read your comments. All schools are in difficult financial situations. I have not seen the school budget but like many schools I know – it goes on running costs and the best resource – the teachers. This project is about building community, both in school and through local sport clubs. I am happy to engage further with you and the school to further discuss your comments. Please leave your details at the school office and I will be in touch.
