Creativity @ The Crypt: Wordpower! for Writers and Poets

(Warwickshire)

A collaboration between St Mary’s Church and the wider community promoting creativity, literacy and public speaking skills. Workshops based around the church will culminate in a public performance and an anthology of stories and poems. The project will benefit local people, including parishioners (20-80+ yrs.) and schoolchildren (14-17 yrs.)

Our goals:

  • To collaborate with local senior schools to run 4 series of workshops encouraging creativity, literacy and public speaking skills in GCSE and A Level students.
  • To collaborate with local writers and poets (both experienced and novices) by running a series of workshops encouraging creativity, literacy and public speaking skills.
  • To select stories from the workshops and produce an anthology of stories, poems and other creative prose to be launched at a public event and sold through St Mary's church and via Amazon.
£25k project Currently ranked 8 in Lifelong Learning

How we will achieve our goals

The community award would be used to: 1) pay for a writer in residence for 2.5 days per week for a year. 2) equip St Mary’s crypt for workshops and pay for workshop supplies. 3) fund professional editing and graphic design. 4) pay for printing and despatch of an initial 250 copies of the book.

Where the money will go

This project will contribute to the life of the community by engaging people of all ages in the art of creative expression. Everyone has a story to tell – this project will help them to tell it! By offering support, gentle guidance, workshops with schools, and a welcoming environment, this project aims to empower would-be local writers and poets.
