Compass Navigators

(Somerset)

Compass Navigators is a Saturday club for disabled children and or children with additional needs (up to age 25), their families and siblings. The club provides families an opportunity to meet together, make friends, share stories, have fun and take part in a range of activities. Funding would enable us to go from monthly sessions to weekly sessions.

Our goals:

  • To increase the number of accessible and family friendly activities on offer for disabled children and their families. Providing time out from their everyday routine to do fun things together, improving family interaction and quality time.
  • To increase opportunities for social interaction. As well as being fun these sessions help young people to mix with others, develop their personal skills, creativity, coordination and motor skills.
  • To increase support for families. Parents/carers when together offer mutual support to one another, share stories and can enjoy some time out by socialising in the café whilst their children take part in activities.

How we will achieve our goals

A community award will enable us to increase the number of opportunities we can offer for families who would benefit from meeting up, creative activities, games and sensory room. New equipment including sensory equipment and arts and crafts materials will ensure that there is plenty of variety on offer to engage each member of the family.

Where the money will go

Providing a much needed community resource for disabled children & children with additional needs and their families, this project will address issues/barriers to accessible & inclusive support & activities, & help in overcoming isolation and inactivity. There will also be opportunities for the community to get involved through volunteering.

This project is so important for families with children with special educational needs or disabilities. It allows the whole family to come together, meet others in a similar situation and enjoy some family time where they are welcomed and allowed to just be them!

Our communities are crying out for this kind of project, expanding it can only be a good thing.
