Blind Mums Connect - London Ladies

(London)

This project will give Visually Impaired (VI) mums confidence as parents. As a peer support group we want to help ourselves and our members and families. Whether they are first time mums, experienced parents, losing sight or congenitally blind. We have a wealth of knowledge to share, and offer practical and emotional support to any VI mum who asks.

Our goals:

  • Getting Ready. Focussed support at the beginning of family life. We will provide specialist group perinatal classes for mums focussing on adapting techniques and increasing confidence. 1:1 at home support for specific issues and extra needs.
  • Getting Steady. Using a proven family support system we will train volunteers who will visit families and help them identify support they need in different aspects of their lives and make concrete positive changes to family life.
  • Getting Going. Leaving the house can be tricky due to logistics or confidence. We will provide a ‘try before you buy’ service on buggies that can be used with a guide dog or cane, slings to carry babies, and regular meet-ups with volunteer support

How we will achieve our goals

We already have a strong community feel to the group, but this funding would be so empowering, it would make a huge difference. We would be able to give hands on support to our most vulnerable mums, those faced with sudden sight loss, those isolated by anxiety or simply needing to try equipment that helps families get out and about.

Where the money will go

This project would provide much more than physical support, it will raise confidence levels, increasing opportunities for the mums, this will in turn hugely benefit their children who will be confidently cared for and able to access more opportunities. The wider community will also benefit from happy supported families taking a full part in life.

This is a fantastic, supportive group which has greatly benefitted me, both practically and emotionally, in my journey through parenthood with a visual impairment. The additional services this money would fund would be incredibly helpful to many of our membrs as they face the challenges of being a VI parent.
