Big Hopes Big Future Ready for School Project

The project is aimed at helping parents to prepare their children with the skills needed to start school or nursery. We will run groups where we empower parents to focus on their help their children by supporting a positive learning environment, establishing routines, and confidently use a range of strategies to support their child’s development.

Our goals:

  • To run groups throughout the year where parents explore child behaviour, supporting their development, establishing good routines, learning self care skills, increasing literacy and numeracy skills and become familiar with the Early Years Curriculum.
  • During the family support groups the parents will be supported in using these skills with their children whilst supported by the Home-Start Family Group Coordinator and skilled trained volunteers using planned, bespoke activities.
  • We have already made links with a local preschool, and primary school in one of the deprived areas of our borough. This project will enable us to work in partnership with the preschool to identify the families who would most benefit from this project

How we will achieve our goals

We are a small local self funded charity under the umbrella of Home-Start UK. This award would enable us to reach and support families in the community who are facing challenges of social marginalisation. This area has significant pockets of deprivation alongside often overlooked due to it being an area of perceived affluence.

Where the money will go

Local children will be enabled and ready to start school having reached the expected developmental milestones, and ready to learn. Children who are ‘school ready’ have been shown to have higher standards of academic achievement, engage in less anti-social behaviour, better educational attainment, higher levels and less antisocial behaviour.

As we all know the early years are the most important in a child’s development and the support that Home Start offers the parents and children is invaluable.

I was a volunteer with Home-Start for 10 years so I know all the wonderful support they give to families. They really deserve to receive this grant and I hope that they do.
