Berwick & District Friends of Dementia Active Mind & Body

We run a weekly support & social group for people with dementia and their carers and wish to introduce a range of dementia friendly activities such as art/craft sessions, music and physical activities all of which are known to be beneficial to people with dementia which can also be enjoyed by their carers.

Our goals:

  • To create a stimulating environment for people with dementia and carers through increased mental and physical wellbeing, enrich lives and strengthen relationships
  • To create opportunities for members of the local community to get involved as volunteers and help raise awareness and reduce the stigma of of dementia
  • To reduce social isolation, which is recognised as affecting many people with dementia and their families.

How we will achieve our goals

Having a community award would allow us to bring a range of activities which ordinarily we would not have funding to do. It would allow us to use appropriately skilled group workers to facilitate twice monthly sessions and buy suitable resources for the sessions.

Where the money will go

There is a dearth of dementia specific support groups in and around Berwick upon Tweed for people living with dementia at the early to moderate stages. This a very remote rural area and the group has an open door policy and welcomes people from both sides of the English/Scottish border
