Art Workshops for Chronic Pain and Mental Health Sufferers

(Dorset)

Art Workshop is a charity providing art creating and making for anyone and everyone. We want to run workshops specifically aimed at those suffering from chronic pain. We also want to be able to run workshops for those suffering from mental health and we want to be able to offer a safe and welcoming environment for lonely and vulnerable people.

Our goals:

  • To reach out to those in the local community who are suffering with chronic pain and provide new art workshops to give them a creative outlet and a place to find help and support.
  • To offer new safe and welcoming workshops for people with mental health/illness.
  • To provide a safe and welcoming environment for lonely and vulnerable people in the community to be able to experience art making.

How we will achieve our goals

We need resources, staff, and funds to pay for the spaces to run the workshops. Without any funding we would be unable to offer any workshops to anybody. We currently offer a small amount of workshops that we charge for but we want people to be able to come for free. Our target groups are often people who have little or no disposable income.

Where the money will go

Swanage and the surrounding areas has a large number of people who are lonely and vulnerable and suffering from mental health or chronic pain. Research has shown that art making and creating benefits those people in the community by giving them a sense of purpose, helping them to connect with others and forgetting about pain issues albeit briefly.

Have attended a similar group and the benefits were fantastic. I began to feel I was capable of doing things for myself and was encouraged to try many types of art.
