Creating a lovely therapy room at St Oswald's Hospice
(Tyne & Wear)
Every year around 500 patients and carers at St Oswald’s Hospice benefit from complementary therapies which can help them relax, relieve their pain or reduce stress. Unfortunately our main therapy room is small, stuffy and in urgent need of redecoration. We want to transform it into an inviting, comfortable and soothing space for all who use it.
Our goals:
- Create a Therapy Space where all our patients and carers report feeling comfortable and relaxed. We could achieve this within 2 months of receiving an award.
- Improve the physical wellbeing of 500 Hospice patients and carers by providing a welcoming space where they can relax and enjoy therapies which help to relieve pain, nausea, muscle spasm and a range of other uncomfortable physical symptoms.
- Improve the emotional wellbeing of 500 patients and carers by creating a safe, comfortable environment for therapies which help to reduce stress, promote relaxation and encourage people to open up about their fears and anxieties.
How we will achieve our goals
We could recreate a ‘spa’ environment for our patients. Dimmable lighting, stylish non slip flooring, a soothing colour scheme and a new music system will create the right ambience. Built in storage and a work space for our therapists will reduce clutter. And smart new soft furnishings (privacy curtain, towels etc) will add a touch of luxury.
Where the money will go
Hospice care is about making sure that people with serious illnesses, enjoy the best possible quality of life. Complementary therapies help to promote physical and emotional wellbeing. This project will provide us with a therapy space which feels safe, private, comfortable and welcoming – a place to relax and forget your troubles for a while. At the moment the room is so stuffy and oppressive that a number of patients have felt overwhelmed and unable to complete their treatment. The improvements will ensure that this is no longer the case and that the service brings the intended benefits to all those who are referred to us.
