Corpus Christi RC School: Breaking Down Barriers For SEN Children

(Lancashire)

Corpus Christi Primary School is a community school that is fully inclusive of all children particularly SEN children and ensures that they are treated with great dignity and respect which they fully deserve. The school desperately needs to create a barrier free school so that all aspects of school life are available to the SEN children at the school.

Our goals:

  • Install a chair lift on the stairs leading to the school hall where all the main activities take place. This will enable disabled children, staff and members of the community to access all areas of the school independently & allow a safe fire exit.
  • Create a sensory bay area/room. Children in wheelchairs would be able to independently access the area and be fully able to access the many sensory resources available allowing a full holistic development of the children.

How we will achieve our goals

The school is not at present able to physically cater for the needs of children with additional physical needs. The award will allow the installation of a platform lift so that disabled children can safely access the school main hall where assemblies, sport activities, dining and a whole host of other vital extracurricular activities take place.

Where the money will go

The school would be a fantastic resource for the community. It would be much more inclusive of the SEN children within the community and give them the opportunity to play and learn together in a safe environment with their peers. This would enhance their personal development, build friendships and more importantly make a difference in their lives.
